Bring on the Watchmen!

by

In Rebirth, DC handed the keys to the kingdom to their creative ace-in-the-hole, Geoff Johns, and it didn’t disappoint. In Rebirth, Johns ambitiously decided to bring the Watchmen from Alan Moore’s 1986 epic into regular Detective Comics canon. While Johns has since left his writing role in terms of the Watchmen crossover “Doomsday Clock,” Scott Snyder seems to have the narrative in safe hands. Rebirth begins by bringing Wally West into the fold and hinting at the villainous revival of Dr. Oz—a familiar face from Watchmen. By the beginning of Rebirth, Superman is more or less restored to the traditional interpretation, Bruce Wayne is once again Batman, and Wonder Woman gets an updated origin courtesy of Greg Rucka.  As far as trades go, DC discontinued making “Deluxe Editions” of its more popular titles with the exception of Batman, whose fifth deluxe book is due out next year. Green Arrow and Justice League of America got only one deluxe outing, while the Flash, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad, Nightwing, Justice League, and Superman Action Comics got three deluxe books. Superman and Batman Detective Comics got four deluxe editions and in the aftermath of Metal, hardcovers are no longer in the “deluxe” line.
