dir. John Sturges
While not focusing on the warfare aspect of WWII, John Sturges’ The Great Escape follows a group of allied soldier PoWs at a Nazi-run camp. The first half of the film has a comedic atmosphere as the captives outfox the captors digging out their escape tunnel. The second half plays out as an action/ adventure when the prisoners begin and follow through with their daring escape. Like The Thin Red Line, The Great Escape boasts a talented ensemble cast of: Steve McQueen, Lord Richard Attenborough, James Garner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, and Donald Pleasance.
