dir. Clint Eastwood
The second half of Eastwood’s Battle of Iwo Jima films in 2006, Letters from Iwo Jima starred Oscar-nominated actor Ken Watanabe (Godzilla, Inception) as a resented Japanese general. Between the two Eastwood Iwo Jima pictures, Letters is generally accepted as more ambitious and received higher acclaim than Flags of Our Father. Isn’t often that a film takes the perspective of the Japanese forces in World War II and the film was awarded an Oscar for Best Achievement in Sound Editing and nominations for Eastwood in the director and best picture categories. His son, Kyle Eastwood, co-scored the film.
