dir. Jean-Jacques Annaud
While more of a blockbuster in tone, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s (Seven Years in Tibet, In the Name of the Rose) Enemy at the Gates contains one of the most brutal depictions of battle on the Russian front during WWII. While the Battle of Stalingrad sequences certainly comes away as the film’s highlight, the fictional plot also captivates throughout. Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Anna Karenina) plays a Soviet marksman boosting the morale of the depressed Russian people as he and a German marksman (Ed Harris- The Rock, A Beautiful Mind) play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse across Russia trying to be the one that picks off the other.
