Dragons are another monster ranking on this list with mythological ties.  Europe and Asia each share ancient stories of flying, fire-breathing beasts.  They’ve been represented in a myriad of interpretations on screen, as well: the traditional sense in most recently the Harry Potter franchise, animated in Mulan (1997), How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and the upcoming sequel, campy in Dragon Wars (2007), superior race/ apex predator in Reign of Fire (2002), cunning in The Hobbit franchise, televised in “Game of Thrones”, Scottish in DragonHeart (1996), and underwhelming in Eragon (2006).  Benedict Cumberbatch’s (Star Trek Into Darkness, August: Osage County) motion capture performance as Smaug proves that a sleeping giant in an obscenely enormous pile of gold is still an independent, intelligent beast with the capacity to breathe fire.
