Spiders have been a phobia presumably since the first time a person woke to a tiny, black bug with hair, eight eyes, and eight legs freely making its way about his or her body and subsequently biting the flesh or, worse, lay eggs. Now blow that idea ridiculously out of proportion with the spider twenty times your size and sprawled before you in an all-consuming manner. Movies have cashed in on the inflation of creepy crawlies, but spiders always finish second to none. Gollum’s friend Shelob comes to mind right before Hagrid’s pal Aragog. Even Peter Jackson included some giant arachnids for last year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
