Here’s a legitimate Best Picture-contender at the 2014 Academy Awards. This film is director/writer/producer Neill Blomkamp’s sophomore effort following 2009’s science fiction game-changer, District 9. District 9 is arguably the best film produced in 2009 with its tortured lead Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), documentary-style shooting with integrated special effects and perfect setting of Johannesburg, South Africa to usher in some social commentary. It appears Blomkamp made out well with the District 9 buzz as he added Matt Damon to play the protagonist and Jodie Foster as the antagonist (not too shabby compared to District 9’s cast of unknowns). Foster dooms Damon to suffer life on a rotting Earth hundreds of years in the future while upper-class human beings live on the luxurious, safe space station called Elysium. Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) costars.
