Sequels, spinoffs, and a couple of surprises
Last summer saw some record highs (Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and some forgettable lows (Fantastic Four, Aloha). This summer seems like more of the same variety. Once again, Marvel Studios dominates opening weekend and box office expectations (Captain America). Luckily, their other property coming from another studio has firm blockbuster roots (X-Men). Blockbuster and studio sequels dominate summer weekends yet again. With Captain America: Civil War opening north of $180 million, it’s safe to say the summer movie season of 2016 commenced this past weekend.
This time we let the trailers do the talking.
