In Salt, Angelina Jolie took over a role abandoned by Tom Cruise because it was too close thematically to his Mission: Impossible franchise. She made the role entirely her own and audiences forgot that the role was ever written for the other gender. Evelyn Salt was so much more than the average spy we normally see in movies. She has a close husband whom she doesn’t deem expendable unlike so many love interests in this genre who die because the protagonist simply doesn’t value life very much. We also didn’t know for which side Salt played throughout the film. Was she a Russian spy trained in the Soviet era? Or was she in deeper cover for the Americans? The film ends on a cliffhanger that sets up a second chapter for which Jolie is currently attached.
