Immersion anticipates Neighbors

As universities draw to an end of the spring semester, Neighbors looks set to keep audiences rolling their seats as early reviews praise Nick Stoller’s (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek) newest comedy film. The relationship between film and college/ university is interesting. Although not a normal setting for films until the Vietnam War-era, college-oriented pictures didn’t really come out until the first wave of film student graduates left school and tended to lean on comedy.  The element of comedy is undeniable even in Mike Nichols’ 1967 film about a recent college graduate, The Graduate, and in other post-grad films like St. Elmo’s Fire from 1985.However, colleges became just as susceptible to dramas in recent years, particularly in true story biopics which appear on the list. Neighbors isn’t poised to blow up the box office (expect The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to keep rolling), but certainly looks to be a raunchy, clever comedy starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne. Honorable mention: Love Story (1970), The Rules of Attraction (2002), Spring Breakers (2012), Real Genius (1985), 21 (2008), Monsters University (2013), Mona Lisa Smile (2003), The Waterboy (1998), Road Trip (2000)
