As John Wilmot, Depp invited the audience to taste Victorian era decadence with him. We follow Wilmot’s selfish descent into sexually transmitted disease and drug & alcohol addiction. He seemed to disappear into the role—a role it seems that would not have befitted any other actor of our time. Depp’s trademark mysticism and magnetism attracted audiences to watch him attract all manner of cohorts and depraved activity. He’s been accused of phoning this one in due to the role’s bizarre (dare I say “quirky”) requirements, but I say if you can’t separate the actor from the role, haven’t they done their job well?
