Johnny Depp dusted off the pipes for his third and most recent Academy Award nomination as the equally macabre and musical London barber. The actor decided to forego a voice double and sang/ recorded all of Todd’s numbers in the film. Perhaps his most ambitious outing with director Burton, frequent Burton collaborator (and spouse) Helena Bonham Carter also appeared in the film as the female lead. Depp starred in Burton’s musical project right before this one in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but had no song and dance numbers as his role of Willy Wonka required none. It was rumored that Stephen Sondheim had doubts with the rock-oriented Depp singing Todd’s part as the actor has been known to play on stage with the band Oasis. I’d say Burton knew he made the right choice all along.
