It’s a rare occasion when a recasting improves upon previous work. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s interpretation of Rachel Dawes was more natural and engaging than the character from Batman Begins. Bruce Wayne seemed to talk easier with her than in Batman Begins. The two characters bickered less yet shared a more complex relationship once Harvey Dent joined the scene. Rachel Dawes served several roles: as the emotional weight of the film, the love interest and subsequent undoing of two main characters, the martyr for a city, and the victim of a psychopath in The Dark Knight.
