Dunst turned in a terrific performance for all three outings as Peter Parker’s girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. However, it’s her turn in the second act Immersion finds the most compelling. Spider-Man 2 picks up with post-high school MJ working as a waitress and chasing a dream on Broadway. This is the film where she dates Harry (James Franco), yet realizes her true feelings for Peter (Tobey Maguire). The scene where she awkwardly speaks with Peter on her break is perhaps the most human moment in Raimi’s trilogy. Although Dunst performs well in all three films, MJ’s transition from high school graduate to Peter Parker’s paramour happens in Spider-Man 2. Dunst as a struggling Broadway actress/ waitress is about as believable drama as comic movies offer.
