She was the first to do it. Margot Kidder played the first female lead in a Hollywood comic-to-film adaptation. The actress had no point of reference and chose to play the hardnosed, pesky journalist represented in the comic books. The result? Kidder managed to capture the heart of both Clark Kent and Superman with the same curious wonder on screen as in the comics. She proved that comic book source material is sufficient to pull off a terrific onscreen performance as she had no other similar film performances from which to glean inspiration at the time.
