The Color Purple (1985)

7. The Color Purple (1985)

Even though The Color Purple didn’t win any of its eleven Academy Award nominations, Spielberg made it clear that he wouldn’t compromise to society’s concerns. Alice Walker’s groundbreaking novel about the lives of African-American women (Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah) in the early twentieth century had been criticized for its controversial depiction of some African-American men within the novel. Spielberg let it be known that he wasn’t looking to placate Hollywood — he was stuck to the source material and the truth behind Walker’s words. (I just wish Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had more “truth” in it.)
