Peter Jackson’s last Middle Earth adventure looks to be his most action-packed judging by the cliffhanger ending of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  Jackson and company have had the monopoly on holiday season blockbusters for the past two years and it’s certainly understandable with the highest quality visuals, sound effects, performances, and narrative to offer.  Summer blockbusters tend to solely stick to the former two without touching all the bases.  Not since 2005 with George Lucas’ Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith have audiences seen a conclusion to a prequel trilogy. Ian McKellan looks to conclude his second trilogy in Middle Earth as Gandalf, as does Orlando Bloom with Legolas. The final showdown with Smaug coupled with Thorin’s war to reclaim Erebor promises an epic, definitive conclusion.
