Many thought David Fincher would finish up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy before moving on to other films, but Fincher’s done a lot since 2011—especially with his involvement in Netflix’s House of Cards. While the plot material from Gone Girl involves similar themes to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (murder, missing persons, and media circus) and is also based on a novel, the two films appear tonally different. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had a punk, alternative ad campaign in conjunction with the pop culture phenomena surrounding it where Gone Girl hasn’t made a big advertising splash. Ben Affleck takes a break from directing to play a husband of a wife gone missing on their fifth wedding anniversary with the spotlight turned to him as a suspect in her disappearance. Fincher submits a stout cast of his own with Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Scoot McNairy, and Missi Pyle.
