The Double: TBA
Enemy: Domestic total of $895,700 on April 6, 2014
This is another one that’s too soon to tell, but given that both are based on separate source material and have quality casts and directors, it’s safe to say that both films appear poised to win awards and garner acclaim or cult status. Both debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2013 and will release to a broader audience within a few months of each other this season. Each film involves its male protagonist (Jesse Eisenberg in The Double, Jake Gyllenhaal in Enemy) meeting his doppelganger. Richard Ayoade directs The Double based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story, and Denis Villeneuve directs Enemy based on Jose Saramago’s work.
