Snow White and the Huntsman: $396 million worldwide on $170 million budget

Mirror Mirror: $166 million worldwide on $85 million budget

Although receiving dreadful reviews, Mirror Mirror received an Academy Award nomination for Costume Design. Despite a scandalous, shameful on-set affair between director Rupert Sanders and star Kristen Stewart, Snow White and the Huntsman received two Oscar noms and blew up the box office.  Both movies put Snow White front-and-center in a live-action adventure. Mirror Mirror had talented director Tarsem Singh and superstar Julia Roberts, but it stuck to an all-too-familiar plot and relied heavily on bad jokes. Snow White and the Huntsman offered little in substance, but much in style. The dark, gothic interpretation partnered with a dark, star-powered villain in Charlize Theron was enough to draw in people by the droves on opening weekend.  So much of a draw that there are talks of a Huntsman spinoff to further separate the franchise from its earlier scandal and capitalize on Chris Hemsworth’s star and friendlier image. Both films managed to turn a plot, but I can’t call either of them “winners.”
