Olympus Has Fallen: $161 million worldwide on $70 million budget

White House Down: $205 million worldwide on $150 million budget

White House Down was a domestic bomb at $73.1 million. Why? It had two of the biggest stars of the season in: 1) a Channing Tatum fresh off of Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street, and 2) Jamie Foxx rolling hot off of Django Unchained and signing up for villain duties in the Spider-Man sequel. It had a prime late-June date. The issue? First, it was up against the original, female buddy cop comedy The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.  The girls beat the boys this time. Olympus Has Fallen had a proven genre star in Gerard Butler with a proven genre director in Antoine Fuqua. The ensemble of Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo and Aaron Eckhart beats the supporting cast of White House Down, which tended to stay on the dynamic duo for most of the duration. Olympus Has Fallen managed to hold its own at the box office among family favorite The Croods.
