After getting pushed back several times, the immensely-popular video game Assassin Creed finally receives the cinematic treatment. Debuting in late December, 20th Century Fox has enough confidence to put Assassin’s Creed up against Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The game translation follows Callum (Michael Fassbender—Prometheus) who gains the abilities of an ancient, master assassin while perusing memories from one of his ancestors via his genetic code. Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Brendan Gleeson (In the Heart of the Sea), Michael Kenneth Williams (“Boardwalk Empire”), and Jeremy Irons (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) co-star as Fassbender reteams with Macbeth director Justin Kurzel. Like Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed is a film based on an undeniable pop culture phenomenon with studios banking that gamers are the same people buying the majority of movie tickets.
